In the 3rd century A.D., the Greek geographer Ptolemy referred to it as Jang Si Lang, later known as Junk Ceylon on early maps of Siam. In the 16th century, Phuket became famous for its tin mining, drawing Dutch, French and British traders, and the British later sent Captain Francis Light to scout the island as a possible base for controlling the Malacca Straits.
